This is my first post for Healthy Around BOston. My goal is to try not to cave into my sugar cravings since I was diagnosed several years ago with Hypothyroid. I have to eat at least gluten/dairy free and low sugar along with organic! Only way to go stricter would be doing the Gut and Psychology Syndrome diet that cures leaky gut and you eat lots of bone broth and fermented veggies.
I wanted to bring up the topic of an Emergency Snack since if you like me or most Americans and your caught with no pre made food that you put in your igloo (cooler) then you have to make do with whats in your glove box or find a nearby healthy supermarket or health food store which is not always near where you are driving. I recently visited a health food store in Porter Square called Cambridge Naturals. They do have some new and unique snack like items. The total amount of food options are on the low side but they do have some unique options that are hard to find. Also, be careful it can be quite pricey in there. I found an interesting option in there if you can believe it Grass Fed Jerky Knick's Sticks. It is made fo beef, water, redmond seasoned, salt, lactic acide, celery juice and a few other healthy spices.Oh it has no antibiotics either which si always a nice thing. I had it along with my Jason's (non-organic yikes!) Almond Butter packet which is about a dollar at any Whole Food's and always tastes great and is just three grams of sugar along with healthy monosatured fat that you want for heart health. The Grass Fed Jerkey was pretty darn good as you would expect with jerkey it was salty but the after taste of salt was covered up with the almond butter. I have some other emergency ideas which I will discuss in a future post. If you have any go to emergency snacks (ideally not unsprouted nuts that have anti-nutrients, phytates) please let post! Trying to fit in this tight low sugar (hardest of all things to do 5 grams of sugar and 20 grams of carbs or less)/gluten/dairy free and organic can certainly be difficult nevermind trying to make it tasty and doing so on a budget:-)
